Heterosis–Genetic Basis and Utilization for Improvement of Dairy Cattle: A Review
Abstract: The phenomenon in which progeny of crosses between inbred lines or purebred populations are better than the expected average of the two populations or lines for a particular trait is known as heterosis. Utilization of heterosis is the main goal of crossbreeding. The amount of heterosis maintained in a herd depends on the type of crossbreeding system selected for breeding. Heterosis includes greater viability, faster growth rate and greater milk …

Heterosis in Plants
Abstract: It refers to hybrid vigor or heterosis; herein, the offspring expressed better traits than one or both parent lines. This most often manifests in crop breeding as increased yield in F1 hybrids compared with their parents. Developing high-yielding hybrid cultivars across a wider range of crops represents an important strategy for addressing future food security. However, conventional hybrid breeding approaches are fraught with significant challenges in many self-pollinating crops, such …

Heterosis in Blackgram - History and Future Thrust
Abstract: AbstractHeterosis is the increase in vigor that is observed in progenies of matings of diverse individuals from different species, isolated populations or selected strains within species or populations. Heterosis has been of immense economic value in agriculture and has important implications regarding the fitness and fecundity of individuals in natural populations. Considering mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek), a pulse crop which is self-pollinated, little work has been done on heterosis. …

Reverse Breeding: A New Method for Crop Improvement
Abstract: Reverse breeding makes use of genetic modification to facilitate breeding of F1 hybrids by suppression of meiotic recombination which starts with an elite heterozygous line and aims at the generation of homozygous parental lines and later original heterozygous line isconstituted. The technique allows breeders to produce a hybrid in much shorter time than the conventional methods. The objectives of reverse breeding are to provide alternative method for providing homozygous parental …

Genetic Diversity Studies of Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) Genotypes
Abstract: Twenty-two genotypes of eggplant were evaluated to assess the genetic diversity within the genotypes at Horticulture Research Centre (HRC) field, Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Jamalpur, Bangladesh during the winter season of 2013-2014. Genetic diversity among 22 eggplant genotypes was estimated using Mahalanobis’s D2 statistic. Altogether five clusters were formed. Cluster II enclosed the highest number of genotypes (6) and cluster IV contained the lowest …
