Toxicity Evaluation of a Few PAHs on a Local Freshwater Fish—Rasbora daniconius
Abstract: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) have become ubiquitous pollutants of water resulting mainly from petroleum products. These are absorbed into the living systems and converted into secondary metabolites which show bioaccumulation in the living systems and have several deleterious effects on them. The present study attempts to evaluate toxicity of two such PAHs— Naphthalene and Anthracene—on the freshwater fish, Rasbora daniconius, using pure PAHs dissolved in dichloromethane. LC50 values were seen …

Effects of Chlorpyrifos as Inducer for Oxidative Stress in Liver, Kidney and Spleen of Freshwater Fish, Pseudetroplus maculatus (Bloch, 1795)
Abstract: Chlorpyrifos is one of the most common organophosphate insecticides found abundantly in freshwater ecosystems and has been detected in agricultural and fishery products worldwide. The study focused to determine the effect of chlorpyrifos on the induction of oxidative stress in freshwater fish Pseudetroplus maculatus. Fish were exposed to sublethal concentrations (0.661 and 1.32 μg/l) of chlorpyrifos for 15 and 30 days. Activities of antioxidant enzymes and the levels of hydrogen …

Assessing the Diversity of Migratory Fishes in the Shivnath River, Chhattisgarh, India
Abstract: The Shivnath River, a major tributary of the Mahanadi River in Chhattisgarh, India, is home to various migratory fish species. These fish are vital to the river’s ecosystem and provide important sources of income and food for local communities. This study looks at the diversity, distribution, and conservation status of these migratory fish species in the Shivnath River. Through extensive field surveys, researchers identified 10 migratory fish species in the …

Pyrethroid Mediated Some Macromolecular and Biochemical Changes in Freshwater Teleost
Abstract: Abstract In present investigation, a freshwater fish Channa punctatus was exposed for 21 days to synthetic pyrethroid malathion at sublethal concentrations of 0.007mg L−1 and 0.093 mg L−1 that represented 10% of the 96 h LC50 of the pesticide for this fish. Tissue samples were collected at the end of the experiment and analyzed to determine oxidant/antioxidants status (catalase, LDH, DNA content, protein content, cortisol, etc.) of the fish. Enzyme …

A Comprehensive Review on Ethnomedicinal Uses of Fishes in Asia
Abstract: In Asia, fish hold a multifaceted role as crucial dietary and economic resources, cultural symbols, and traditional ethnomedicine remedies. With over 4,000 known freshwater and marine fish species in Asian waters, these aquatic creatures feature prominently in the region's diverse ethnomedical traditions. The continent's numerous ethnic groups, each with unique indigenous medical practices, often rely on traditional ethnomedicine due to limited access to modern allopathic healthcare. The paper delves into …

Histopathological Effects of Silver Nanoparticles on Gills and Liver of Freshwater Fingerlings Catla catla (Ham.)
Abstract: Fish is the best biomarker to identify the adverse effect on surroundings. Here, the fingerlings of major carp (Catla catla) were used as a model in the present work to investigate the toxicity caused by silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The fish exposed to different concentrations of 10 μg/L and 30 μg/L AgNPs for 15 days were sampled at days 5, 10 and 15 for histology. This exposure caused organ injuries, and …

The Alarming Impact of Microplastics on the Reproductive System of Fish
Abstract: Environmental contaminants that are biologically active significantly affect ecosystems, animals, and human health. Plastic pollution has drawn international attention for its detrimental effect on the environment and biodiversity health. The aquatic ecology of our planet is full of microplastics. Regular, extensive use of nonbiodegradable polymers required several years for them to break down. Over the course of those years, it discharged tiny particles of 100 nm or less. Due to …

Treated Sewage in Fish Farming and Ecological Challenges
Abstract: The use of treated sewage in fish farming presents a sustainable and cost-effective approach towards resource conservation and aquaculture productivity. Treated sewage is enriched with essential nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, which supports the growth of aquatic plants and phytoplankton. These are vital components of aquaculture ecosystems. This practice reduces freshwater dependency and mitigates waste disposal challenges as well as aligns with circular economy principles. Pilot projects in China and …

Evaluation of Metal Pollution in Wetlands Using Fish as an Indicator
Abstract: The current study has attempted to document the heavy metal pollution in wetlands using fish as an indicator. Heavy metals are one of the most toxic, persistent and widespread groups of contaminants in aquatic systems. Their effects may often occur and remain unrecognized at the individual level but slowly, over a period of time, show up at a population level. Over a few decades globally there has been growing interest …

Ecological and Biomonitoring Studies of Freshwater with Reference to Selected Phytoplankton Species of Manar Reservoir, Maharashtra
Abstract: Freshwater reservoirs play a crucial role in supporting domestic, agricultural, and fisheries requirements, particularly in semi-arid regions of Maharashtra. Rivers and the surface water are important sources of drinking and several other usages. Aquatic ecosystems are vital in the supply of nutritious food and food source supplementation. Therefore, we selected to study the role of plankton within the aquatic ecosystem systematically here. Plankton are very small organisms; they are of …

Impact of Hexavalent Chromium on Histopathology in Freshwater Stinging Catfish Heteropneustes Fossilis
Abstract: Acute toxicity of Cr (VI) (as K2Cr2O7) to freshwater stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis and its histopathological impacts on gill and liver tissue were evaluated. Fish showed behavioral alterations after K2Cr2O7 exposure and 96 h-LC50 was 35.724 mg/L in static bioassay. Fish were exposed to three sub-lethal concentrations (concentration I=1/4th of 96 h-LC50, concentration II=1/10th of 96 h-LC50 and concentration III=environmental concentration of Cr reported in the river Buriganga). Blood, liver …

The Predatory Bacteria, Bdellovibrio and Like Organisms (BALOs): An Emerging Savior for Human Welfare
Abstract: Bdellovibrio and like organisms (BALOs) are capable of killing other Gram negative pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria dwelling in a diverse environmental niches such as soil, freshwater and ocean. The predatory nature of BALOs can be a viable alternative to conventional use of antibiotics to treat ocular, periodontal, respiratory and fish pathogen infections since the incessant use develops resistance against them. Unique property such as potential to survive in ecologically hazardous …

Molecular Surveillance of Spring Viraemia of Carp Virus (SVCV) and Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) Across Major Aquaculture Zones of Telangana, India
Abstract: Viral diseases represent a persistent threat to cyprinid aquaculture; however, region-specific surveillance data from tropical production systems remain limited. To address this gap, a comprehensive statewide active surveillance programme was undertaken across Telangana, India, from 2019 to 2022 to investigate the occurrence of two priority transboundary pathogens, Spring Viraemia of Carp Virus (SVCV) and Koi Herpesvirus (KHV). A total of 414 fish specimens were systematically collected from five surveillance sectors …
