Hydrogen-based Steel Making - The future?
Abstract: The largest energy consumer i.e. 5% of global energy consumption and 7% of global CO2 emissions are produced by the iron and steel sector. The steel industry is a significant contributor to anthropogenic CO2 emissions, largely due to the use of carbon as a reducing agent in the production of virgin steel. The main cause of these emissions is the decrease in iron ore. While recycling scrap steel in electric …

Concentrated Solar Energy in Iron Production: Towards Zero-Carbon Metallurgy
Abstract: Given the importance of environmental protection in modern societies, one of the objectives of industrial strategies in general and the metallurgical industries in particular is to find new, ecologically acceptable energy sources. One of these energy sources is solar energy, which, when properly concentrated, has a lot of promise for high temperature applications like those needed in metallurgical operations. In this work, we suggest using focused sun energy to make …

Eco-Friendly Steel Making for a Sustainable Future
Abstract: The iron and steel industry is one of the most energy-intensive sectors, accounting for approximately 5% of global energy consumption and contributing around 7% of worldwide CO2 emissions. The industry's carbon footprint is particularly challenging to reduce, as carbon plays a crucial role as a stoichiometric reducing agent in conventional steel production. The reduction of iron ore during the manufacture of primary (virgin) steel is responsible for a sizable amount …

Iron Ore Beneficiation through Reverse Flotation: Advances in Nanobubble-Assisted Flotation Technology for Lean Grade Ore Upgradation and Silica Removal: A Review
Abstract: The global demand for high-grade iron ore concentrates continues to surge as readily available rich ores become depleted. Iron ore beneficiation through froth flotation has emerged as a critical technology for upgrading lean-grade iron ores (typically 25–35% Fe) to produce high-quality concentrates (64–70% Fe) suitable for direct reduction and blast furnace operations. This comprehensive review examines the fundamental principles of flotation in iron ore beneficiation, with particular emphasis on the …

Catalytic Performance Improvement in Polymer Derived Nanostructures for Fuel Cell Applications
Abstract: The performance and operational lifetime of PEMFCs are closely linked to the catalytic activity and durability of cathode electrocatalysts. In this research, a polymer-derived cobalt–iron nitrogen-doped carbon (CoFe–N/C) nanostructured catalyst is developed to enhance the ORR performance for PEMFC applications. PAN and melamine serve as nitrogen-rich polymer precursors, while cobalt and iron salts generate highly dispersed metal–nitrogen active sites within a porous carbon matrix through thermal treatment at 900 °C. …

Magnetorheological Composite Dampers for Railway Wagon Suspension: Modelling Validation and Performance Analysis
Abstract: Railway wagons encounter continuous vibrations due to track irregularities, resulting in reduced ride comfort and higher dynamic loads. Conventional suspension systems based on springs, hydraulic dampers, or air suspensions provide only limited vibration mitigation. This work investigates the application of magnetorheological (MR) fluid-based dampers, where a polymeric carrier oil (silicone oil) reinforced with carbonyl iron particles serves as a smart composite suspension medium. The MR fluid is synthesized and characterized …

Comparative Study of Structural and Optical Properties of Bismuth Ferrite Nanoparticles for Photovoltaic Applications Synthesized via Different Sol-Gel Methods
Abstract: Pure multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using an energy-efficient, low-temperature sol-gel method, comparing two distinct approaches: auto-combustion and non-auto-combustion. To ensure phase stability, the precursor solution's pH was strictly maintained between 1 and 2 using ammonia solution (NH4OH), while ethylene glycol (C2H6O2) was employed as a chelating agent for the Fe3+ and Bi3+ cations. All samples underwent a final annealing process at 500 °C to promote crystallization. …

Enhancing Mechanical and Durability Performance of Composite Material Using Egg Shell Powder and Copper Slag.
Abstract: This research aims to investigate the use of copper slag (CS) and Egg Shell Powder (ESP) as partial substitutes in polymer composite to enhance mechanical properties and durability. Considering that the construction sector is recognized for consuming a significant amount of resources in comparison to other industries, its further expansion poses a direct danger to resource availability. This could disrupt ecosystems, lower biodiversity, and have an effect on riverine and …
