Defensive Mechanisms and Key Strategies with Its Specified Role in Mulberry Silkworm (Bombyx mori L.)
Abstract: Silkworms (Bombyx mori L.) possess a variety of defense mechanisms that play a vital role in protecting them against microbial infections and environmental stressors. These defense systems are primarily innate, relying on cellular and humoral responses. Cellular defenses include hemocytes which are responsible for processes like phagocytosis, encapsulation, and nodule formation. Humoral responses involve the production of antimicrobial peptides (AMP’s), such as cecropins, moricins, and lysozymes, which target invading pathogens. …

Olfactory Intelligence in Bio-Hybrid UAVs: Integrating Living Lepidoptera Sensors for High-Precision Environmental Monitoring
Abstract: Autonomous aerial systems still face major challenges when attempting to locate airborne volatile organic compounds because many conventional gas sensors react slowly and cannot reliably follow turbulent chemical plumes. To address this limitation, a bio-hybrid sensing approach was explored using the antenna of the silkworm moth, Bombyx mori, as a natural chemical detector. The antenna was connected to an Electroantennogram (EAG) system that converts biological nerve signals into digital signals …

Silkworm Growth and Silk Yield under Changing Climatic Conditions: Challenges and Adaptations
Abstract: Climate change is emerging as a critical factor affecting agriculture and sericulture industries worldwide. Rising global temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and the growing frequency of extreme weather events present ever challenges to the growth and productivity of silkworms (Bombyx mori L.). Silkworms are extremely sensitive to environmental conditions like temperature, humidity, and photoperiod, all altered by climate change. Higher temperatures can accelerate silkworm metabolism, reduce silk yield, and increase susceptibility …

Pros and Cons of Adopting Artificial Diet for Silkworms
Abstract: Silkworms (Bombyx mori L.) were renowned for their ability to produce silk fibers and have played an essential role in the textile industry for thousands of years. Traditionally, these insects have been raised on mulberry leaves which provide them with the necessary nutrients to grow and spin silk. However, in recent years, advancements in agricultural and industrial practices have led to the development of artificial diets for silkworms. These synthetic …

Types of Fungi Species Attacking Mulberry, Symptoms, and Their Interaction
Abstract: Mulberry trees (Morus spp.) are essential in sericulture since their leaves are the primary source of nutrition for silkworms (Bombyx mori L.). The cultivation of mulberry trees has long been integral to the silk industry, particularly in countries like China, India, and Japan. However, like all agricultural crops, mulberry trees are vulnerable to a variety of pests and pathogens including fungi. Fungal diseases can have a profound impact on mulberry …

Innovations in Sericulture: A Review of IoT and AI-Based Monitoring Systems
Abstract: Sericulture is a science which deals with the rearing of silkworms and production of silk. In India most of the rural livelihood is sericulture and is the base for financial, social, political, and intellectual advancements and upliftment since. Silk is called the queen of textiles due to its glittering luster, softness, elegance, durability, and tensile properties. There exist several commercial species of silkworms, yet the commonly used one is bombyx …

High-Performance Biodegradable Films from Bamboo Derived Cellulose Nanofibers and Silk Fibroin: Engineering Sustainable Polymer Composites
Abstract: This research presents the advancement of biodegradable composite films from cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) extracted from bamboo and silk fibroin (SF) derived from Bombyx mori cocoons. CNF/SF composites were fabricated in three different compositions—CS10, CS30, and CS50—via aqueous blending and solution casting, followed by ethanol-induced β-sheet stabilization. Mechanical testing confirmed a considerable enhancement in tensile strength from 72 MPa (CS10) to 112 MPa (CS50), while Young’s modulus improved from 2.4 GPa …
