Bacteriophage Therapy in Dairy Farming: A Potential Alternative to Antibiotics
Abstract: The widespread use of antibiotics in dairy farming to control bacterial infections has led to significant challenges, including the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and concerns over antibiotic residues in milk. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for alternative approaches to control bacterial infections in dairy cattle. One promising solution is bacteriophage therapy, which uses viruses that selectively infect and destroy bacteria. As a result, the need for new strategies to …

Bacteriophages- A New Frontier in Medicine
Abstract: Bacteriophages, or phages, are viruses that specifically target and infect bacteria, offering an innovative alternative to traditional antibiotic treatments, especially in the face of rising antibiotic resistance. The resurgence of phage therapy has been driven by the increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains and the slowdown in the development of new antibiotics. Phages, unlike antibiotics, target specific bacterial strains, reducing the impact on the natural microbiota and potentially offering a …

Antimicrobial Peptides and Bacteriophages as Next-Generation Alternatives to Conventional Antibiotics
Abstract: The growing threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has underscored the urgent need for innovative alternatives to conventional antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and bacteriophages are gaining recognition as next-generation therapeutics due to their distinct mechanisms of action and ability to target resistant pathogens effectively. AMPs, which can be natural or synthetic, disrupt microbial membranes and offer broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity with a reduced likelihood of resistance development. Bacteriophages, as bacteria-specific viruses, provide precise …

Lysogenic Phage Cocktails with Embedded Fluorophores for Field Wound Diagnostics.
Abstract: Rapid and accurate detection of wound infections in field settings remains a critical challenge in emergency and military medicine. Conventional microbiological diagnostics are time- consuming and laboratory-dependent. Bacteriophages, particularly lysogenic phages, offer high specificity toward bacterial hosts and can be engineered as diagnostic tools. A translational framework was developed for lysogenic bacteriophage cocktails embedded with fluorophore reporters for rapid, point-of-care wound diagnostics. Mechanisms of phage infection, lysogenic integration, and fluorophore …

The Dual Crisis: Antibiotic Resistance and the Discovery Void – A Review of Novel Therapeutic Strategies and Non-Traditional Approaches
Abstract: The global rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as one of the most critical public health challenges of the 21st century, threatening to undermine decades of therapeutic success and rendering conventional antibiotic regimens increasingly ineffective. Parallel to the escalating resistance rates is a profound “discovery void,” characterised by a steep decline in the development of new antibiotic classes since the late 20th century. Together, these two interconnected crises create …

Pathogens in Nosocomial Infections: Epidemiology, Resistance, and Control Measures
Abstract: Nosocomial infections, also known as healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), are a serious global health issue, leading to higher patient morbidity, prolonged hospital stays, and increased medical costs. Various pathogens—such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—are responsible for these infections, especially in healthcare environments where they easily spread. They can be transmitted through direct contact with infected patients, contaminated medical equipment, or even airborne particles.Patients with weakened immune systems, those requiring prolonged …

Metagenome-Informed Engineering of Monoclonal Antibodies: Mining Microbial Immunoglobulin-Like Domains for Ultra-Stable Therapeutics
Abstract: Metagenome-informed engineering represents an emerging strategy for improving the stability and functionality of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) by leveraging the vast diversity of microbial immunoglobulin-like (Ig-like) domains (10,24). These domains, derived from uncultured bacteria and bacteriophages, exhibit exceptional thermostability, protease resistance, and structural resilience due to adaptation to extreme environments (29,30). This review highlights advances in metagenomic mining, structural characterization, and protein engineering that enable the integration of microbial Ig-like scaffolds …
