Soft Robotic Actuators in Corporeal Assistive Devices
Abstract: The following paper discusses various applications of soft robotic actuators mainly in the form of corporeal assistive devices i.e., devices for assisting various parts of the human body. Being inexpensive, light weight, soft, non-restrictive and easy to use they are replacing the conventional rigid actuators in every application. Soft actuators are pneumatically powered and consist of compliant elastomeric materials. This paper reviews the use of soft robotic actuators in assistive …

Structure–Property-Guided Polymer–Metal Hybrid Design of a Wall Plastering Spray Assembly
Abstract: Wall plastering spray equipment requires a combination of low mass, dimensional stability, abrasion resistance, chemical compatibility with cementitious mortar, and comfortable operator interaction. The original assembly was primarily developed as a metallic mechanical system; however, a polymer-focused material architecture can reduce non-load-bearing mass while retaining a safe metallic pressure path. This study, therefore, presents a structure–property-guided polymer–metal hybrid design in which the pressure housing and nozzle insert remain metallic, whereas …

Thermo-Responsive Polymer Blends for Minimally Invasive Medical Procedures
Abstract: Thermo-responsive polymer blends have become a key new class of biomaterials for the minimally invasive medical procedure. They offer precision, flexibility and greater patient safety. These smart materials undergo a change of physical/ mechanical properties relative to temperature difference in the body, limiting tissue trauma and increasing effectiveness of the procedure. Their adjustable sol-gel behavior, shape-memory effects and reversible volume change provides an opportunity for their precise delivery through catheters, …

Bio-Inspired Polymer Composites for Artificial Cartilage Replacement
Abstract: The rising cases of osteoarthritis, traumatic injuries, and degenerative joint diseases are also putting pressure on the new material that is durable, biocompatible and mechanically resilient to act as artificial cartilage. The normal articular cartilage is composed of collagen fibers, protein glycids and water in the interstitium. These elements provide it with excellent load bearing quality, lubrication and wear resistance. Due to the limited self-repair capacity of cartilage and the …

Exploring the Effect of Modified Nanosilica on a Model LDPE–EVA-based TPE System
Abstract: The effect of modified nanosilica particles on a model low-density polyethylene (LDPE)–ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) based thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) blend system is explored in this article. Modified nanosilica particles were melt-blended with the LDPE-EVA system at 1.5, 3, and 5 wt% loadings through the variation of the sequence of addition. The blends were compression molded, and their morphological, rheological, mechanical and thermal properties were evaluated. The properties of the …

Thermogravimetric and crystallinity studies of ER/PS blends
Abstract: Thermoplastic elastomeric blends of polystyrene (PS) and exudated resin (ER) were prepared by solution casting technique. The decomposition behavior of these blends was studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The effect of blend ratio and cross linking on the thermal behavior of ER/PS blend system was studied. An enhancement in thermal stability was observed by the addition of ER into polystyrene. The activation energy of degradation was calculated by using Horowitz-Metzger equation. …

Investigation on Synergistic effect of Carbon Black on Flow properties of EPDM Composite
Abstract: Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer is one of the most widely used rubbers in automotive exterior sealing systems. It is the material of choice for automotive sponge weather strips around doors, trunks and hoods. Its exceptional air and ozone resistance capabilities, combined with its compounding adaptability, result in high-performing profiles at a low cost, while sealing off water, dirt, and noise for the life of the vehicle. Over the last decade, …
