Abstract: Objectives: No effective physiological mechanism for excess iron excretion is known in humans. Conditions such as sickle cell disease (SCD), where red blood cell transfusion is a frequently employed therapy can subsequently result in ready accumulation and circulation of exogenous iron as non-transferrin bound iron in tissues with possible impairment of iron homeostasis in them. Aim: The influence of multiple blood transfusions on the patterns of iron homeostasis in correlation …

Experimental Study on the Effect of Combination of Two Ginseng-Containing Prescriptions of Koryo Herbal Medicines and Fluconazole in Systemic Candidiasis Mouse Model
Abstract: We evaluated the efficacy of two Ginseng-containing prescriptions of Koryo herbal medicines combined with fluconazole (FLC) against systemic candidiasis, using experimental mouse model. The results showed that combined with FLC, treatment of mice with Sa-Gun-Za-Tang or Sip-Zon-Dae-Bo-Tang significantly increased the survival rates and decreased the number of viable Candida albicans cells in the kidneys compared with treating animals with FLC alone(P<0.01 for both comparisons). Compared with untreated controls, treatment of …

Extent of Lingual Coarticulation: A Crosslinguistic Study Using Ultrasound Imaging
Abstract: In the recent past, Ultrasound imaging has been used extensively as a tool to measure coarticulation. The extent of coarticulation is the magnitude of distance between tongues contours of adjacent phonemes that varies based on the articulatory dynamics of each phoneme. This lack of invariance is language-specific which is related to the articulatory constraint properties of a particular language. In this context, the present study aimed to analyse the magnitude …

Abstract: Lactobacillus brevis, isolated from human feces was assessed for its in vitro cholesterol reduction ability. The effects of bile salts, inoculum size and contact time in simulated intestinal juice were studied. Central composite design model was utilised to determine the effects of interactions of significant variables on cholesterol reduction. By developing a linear regression model, as a function of growth associated variables in vitro cholesterol reduction was assessed. The results …
