Abstract

The objective of the present study was to predict the toxic properties of sodium tellurite against selected uropathogenic bacteria. A group of nine clinical isolates of different uropathogenic bacteria isolated from urine in suspected cases of urinary tracts infection Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were collected and utilized for screening tests. The spectrum of toxic properties was compared by means formation of zone. Our study revealed that sodium tellurite exhibits a strong toxic effect on Escherichia coli (22±0.1), Staphylococcus aureus (25±0.2), Proteus mirabilis (26±0.2) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (21±0.7). The activity was compared with standard Gentamycin disc (10 μg/disc). However, clinical isolates of uropathogenic bacteria exhibited resistance to sodium tellurite that we screened in our study. Our study suggested that the anti bacterial effect of sodium tellurite is not wider spectrum but selectively more significant even when compared with standard Gentamycin. Keywords: Uropathogenic, Sodium tellurite, susceptibility, bacterial isolatesCite this ArticleKamalakkannan K, Balakrishnan V, Arul Raj R et al.
