Abstract

Abstract Dyes and pigments represent chronic ecological problems as they are toxic and carcinogenic. Purging of dyes from the coloured waste effluents is a crucial problem. Biosorption through algal biomass as a fruitful and cheap process for the purging of dyes from industrial effluents. In the present study, biosorption of red dye textile effluent has been carried out using different doses of the dried biomass of Chara sp. High dose of algal biomass (100 mg) biomass showed higher percent adsorption as compared to a lower dose (50 mg) of algal biomass. Maximum specific uptake value was observed at 40% red dye effluent through 100 mg biomass and at 80% red dye effluent through 50mg biomass. The results of Freundlich adsorption isotherm showed a better biosorption than Langmuir adsorption model. FTIR studies demonstrated that carbonyl, aromatic azo, C=S, sulfur-containing groups could be linked with the accumulation of dye on the adsorbent exterior. Keywords: Textile dye effluent, Biosorption, Chara sp., Adsorption isotherms, Synthetic dyes, aquatic pollution, BiomassCite this ArticleSunil Kumar, Amrik Singh Ahluwalia,Mayank Uday Charaya, Simranjeet Kaur .Adsorption of Textile Dye Effluent throughFresh Water Macroalga .
