Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the acute toxicity in terms of 96h LC50 and behavioural responses of oligochaete worm Tubifex tubifex upon exposure to a thiocarbamate insecticide cartap hydrochloride. All experiments were conducted in a static bioassay system using increasing concentrations of insecticide for different exposure periods. The 24, 48, 72 and 96 h LC50 values of cartap hydrochloride to Tubifex tubifex were 0.045, 0.039, 0.023 and 0.0178 mg/L respectively. The results of the regression analysis indicate that the mortality rate varied significantly (p<0.05) and was positively correlated with the increasing concentration of pesticide as well as exposure time. The changes in behavioural responses were also recorded upon addition of varying concentrations of pesticide in different exposure time (24, 48, 72 & 96 h).Keywords: Acute toxicity, Cartap hydrochloride, Tubifex tubifex, behavioural response.Cite this ArticleSharmistha Medda, Ritwick Bhattacharya, Arnab Chatterjee, Sarmila Pal, Nimai Chandra Saha.
