Abstract

The increasing failures of chemotherapeutics and antibiotic resistance exhibited by pathogenic microbial infectious agents have led to the study on Cuminum cyminum (Family: Apiaceae) for its potential antimicrobial activity against common intestinal pathogens. Cuminaldehyde is considered as the principal component and is believed to be the chief chemical constituent for exhibiting bactericidal activity. The present investigation involved exploration of antibacterial property of cuminaldehyde against some common human intestinal pathogens such as Proteus vulgaris (P. vulgaris, MTCC 1771), Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii MTCC 1425), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae, MTCC 3384), Salmonella typhi (S. typhi, MTCC 733), Escherichia coli (E. coli, MTCC 2961), and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, MTCC 3160). A moderate-to-satisfactory bactericidal activity was expressed by cuminaldehyde against all the six strains. However, cuminaldehyde did not express comparable antibacterial activity than that of the standard drug ciprofloxacin. Although, the current exploration will motivate the researchers in chemistry and biology area in designing and exploring better antibacterial agents in the near future to overcome several challenges such as drug resistance and the emergence of new patterns of infections. Keywords: Cuminaldehyde, Cuminum cyminum, drug resistance, antibacterial, pathogenCite this ArticleJoseph TM, Mahapatra DK.
