Abstract

AbstractAn experiment was conducted at the Research Farm and Laboratory of Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh to observe the performance of tube rose under saline condition. Salinity treatments with five different EC values viz. 2 dS/m, 4 dS/m, 6 dS/m, 8 dS/m and 10 dS/m were applied in the irrigation water alongwith control to two cultivar of tuberose viz. single and double. The experiment has carried out in a Complete Randomized Design with factorial arrangement. Results revealed that tuberose is sensitive to soil salinity. Almost all the vegetative and reproductive parameters of tuberose in both cultivars were unfavorably affected by salinity.  Considering the number of leaves per plant, number of plants per hill, number of spike per plant, number of florets per spike and vase life best performance were observed in control condition (0 dS/m). Most of the studied parameters performed better upto a salinity level of 4 dS/m; but from 6 dS/m and onwards, both the single and double cultivars were adversely affected by the salinity of soil. Considering both cultivar and salinity level, tuberose can be grown at a salinity level up to 4 dS/m without much reduction in number of florets/spike, number of spike/plant, vase life and other characters. Keywords: Salinity, tuberose, spike, florets, vase lifeCite this ArticleMahbuba Rahman, Azizul Hoque.
