Abstract

Microalgae are simple photosynthetic microorganisms that can be cultivated in controlled environmental conditions for different economic and environmental applications. The presentstudy was aimed to isolate commercially important local microalgae species in a laboratory that is suitable for mass production. The sample was taken from the South-Eastern Gulf of Lake Tana from February 2020to January 2021. The isolation was carried out using agar plating technique, serial dilution and capillary pipette methods in C-medium followed by incubation at 2500 Lux (12 dark :12 light) fluorescent light and 24°C temperature. Thirty-five microalgae species were successfully isolated and established. Isolated microalgae were identified and were found to be dominated by filamentous and non-filamentous Cyanobacteria and Chlorella species. The present study provided useful information on commercially important microalgae species on Lake Tana that can be applicable for different purposes if cultivated in controlled conditions.
