Abstract

The edible mushroom Pleurotus florida was cultured under microbiological condition which favored the growth of mycelium on selective potato dextrose agar medium. The same mycelium also grows well in wheat grain substrate during grain spawn production. But the mycelial growth efficiency of P. florida was higher in coconut coir, paddy straw and paddy straw + newspaper waste substrates when spawn running process. The pin head formation stage was only observed in Coconut coir substrate bag while not in other substrates bags. Further there was no fruiting body formation in all substrate bags. The study concluded that the sprouting of basidiocarp does not occur in coconut coir, paddy straw and newspaper waste substrates might be due to unfavorable temperature and humidity maintained in household condition of mushroom cultivation. Such unfavorable condition favors the growth of other fungal contaminants like Aspergillus fumigatus in all substrate bags. The edible mushroom cultivation always requires the favorable condition for all stages of growth including mycelia growth, pin head formation and basidiocarp sprouting which also determined the yield and income of mushroom production technology.
