Abstract

Biomaterials are artificial or natural materials that replace the diseased or damaged organic systems to improve the durability and quality of human life and provide a pain-free life for patients with a range of motions adequate for daily activities. These materials must be mechanically strong and must be amicable to human body. To ensure mechanical behaviour properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, fatigue strength and wear resistance must be adequate to suit the application such as knee replacement or hip replacement. As regards to amicability of the material to human body is concerned, it should not cause any damage to the human tissues and it must endure the harsh environment of human body. In the light of many factors to be considered, selection of appropriate biomaterial becomes a challenging task to orthopaedists. This context can be treated as multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. In the present study mathematical modelling based on analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is implemented to select a suitable bio-implant material for hip replacement. Nine criteria and eight alternatives have been considered. Entropy method is used to determine criteria weights and AHP is used to prioritize the alternatives. Keywords: Mechanical behaviour, biocompatibility, multi-criteria decision making, entropy method, analytic hierarchy process  Cite this ArticleRajani P, Jawahar Babu A.
