Abstract

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum L.) is an emerging destructive weed of field crops and waste lands in Pakistan. This field experiment was conducted to evaluate different pre- and post-emergence herbicides for Silybum marianum L. control in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Randomized Complete Block design (RCBD) with split plot arrangement having three replications was employed. The application of Bromoxynil+MCPA to wheat crop showed maximum plant height (94.75 cm), number of productive tillers (240.00 m-2), spike length (16.42 cm), number of grain spike-1 (33.00), 1000-grain weight (40.92 g), grain yield (5.79 t ha-1) and biological yield (10.89 t ha-1). The minimum biological yield (8.39 t ha-1), grain yield (4.46 t ha-1), plant height (87.6 cm), spike length (15.00 cm), 1000-grain weight (36.07 t ha-1) was observed in Carfentrazone ethyl+isoprotoron as compared to others herbicides. Doses means represented that recommended level of herbicide gave plant height (95.6 cm) and spike length (18.67 cm) than low and high doses. The maximum number of plants height (103 cm) of wheat was observed in Bromoxynil+MCPA @ 1.03 mL. The interaction between herbicides and their levels showed that maximum biological yield (12.30 t ha-1) and grain yield (6.34 t ha-1) was observed in Tribenuron-methyl at 5.49 ml. It may be due to favorable combination of herbicide and its dose according to present environment. The minimum plant height (81 cm), spike length (14.47 cm), biological yield (7.57 t ha-1) and grain yield (3.57 t ha-1) of wheat was recorded in control treatment while among herbicides minimum plant height (81 cm) and grain yield (3.57 t ha-1) were found in Carfentrazone ethyl+isoprotoron.
