Isolation, Characterization and Molecular Identification of Potential Probiotic Bacterium, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CS4 from gut of Snakehead Fish, Channa striata (Bloch, 1793)
Abstract: The present study was to isolate and characterize the potential probiotic bacterium from the gutof healthy fish, Channa striata. Totally, 37 bacteria were isolated from the gut region, in whichonly 25 isolates that showed catalase negative were selected. Among the selected isolates, CS4exhibited maximum inhibitory activity against fish (Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio harveyi,Vibrio parahaemolyticus) and human (Serratia marcescens) pathogenic bacteria. Theisolate CS4 exhibited potential tolerance to 0.5% bile salts at 24 …

Feeding Damage Induced by Brevipalpus Phoenicis Geijskes (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) on the Invasive Weed, sLantana Camara L.
Abstract: The flat mite, Brevipalpus phoenicis is a very common species of tenuipalpid mite, exhibiting an extensive host range and causing economic damage on all types of economic crops, globally. Exotic plants lead to large scale ecosystem degradation due to rapid increase in extent and severity of their invasion. In the present study, an attempt was made to elucidate the feeding damage induced by B. phoenicis on an invasive weed plant, …

Sensory Evaluation, Physico-Chemical Characteristics and Antioxidant Capacity of Biscuits Incorporated with Dry Banana Peel Powder
Abstract: In this study an effort was made to incorporate banana peel powder in biscuits formula. Control biscuit (100:00) and experimental biscuits with varying levels of banana peel powder (BPP) were prepared using standard method. The biscuits were studied for their sensory, physical, textural and color characteristics as well as nutritional value. The highest overall acceptability score was observed in control biscuits which showed a significant difference (p≤0.05) with experimental biscuits …

Transient Heat Shock Induces Oxidative Stress in Mice Testes. Amelioration by Selenium and Vitamin E
Abstract: The present study evaluated the role of Selenium (0.5 ppm selenium/kg diet) and Vitamin E (200 mg alpha-tocopherol/kg diet) (as antioxidants) in modulating the oxidative stress induced during transient heat shock (42°C-30 mins) in mice testes. Study included six different groups of male Balb/c mice; Control, Heat shock, Selenium, Selenium+heat shock, Vitamin E and Vitamin E+heat shock. Sperm parameters viz. sperm concentration and sperm motility, LPO and ROS levels, GSH, …

An Improved Method for the Isolation of High Quality Genomic DNA from Axenic Cultures of Filamentous Blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria), Nostoc and Anabaena
Abstract: Blue-green algae are one of the important organisms having different ecological and economic important properties and are among one of the least explored one. The major difficulty is met with their exact identity; this could be tackled to an extent with the use of molecular techniques. Isolation of high quality DNA is essential for molecular biology applications. In the present study an efficient protocol for the extraction of genomic DNA …

A Comparative Account of Diversity of Hydrophytes in Some Inland Wetlands (Pariej, Kanewal and Wadhwana) of Central Gujarat
Abstract: The present study compares diversity of hydrophyte species of three inland wetlands of Central Gujarat (Pariej, Kanewal and Wadhwana wetlands.). The study had recorded occurrence of total 19 species of hydrophytes that included 8 species of rooted submerged, 1 species of free floating, 5 rooted species with floating leaves and 5 species of emergent hydrophyte. Relatively higher diversity of hydrophytic plant species was recorded in Pariej Wetland followed by Kanewal …

Metal Tolerance Potential of A. fumigatus and Comparative Analysis of Biosorption through Control and Trained Biomass
Abstract: Heavy metal pollution in water because of the discharge of industrial effluent imposes serious environmental concerns. Copper is one of such pollutants which is are considered as toxic, non-biodegradable and persistent in nature. Removal of heavy metals through conventional treatment strategies can cause many technical problems. Filamentous fungi have the ability to accumulate significant amount of heavy metals from their environment. Therefore, the potential of resistant fungal biomass as biosorptive …
