Acute Toxicity and Behavioral Alterations of Oligochaete Worm, Branchiura sowerbyi Exposed to Diazinon
Abstract: In the present study, acute toxicity of the organophosphate pesticide, diazinon, was evaluated under experimental condition to Oligochaete worm, Branchiura sowerbyi. The 96 h LC50 with 95% confidence limits of B. sowerbyi was 2.87 (2.50–3.17) mg/l. None of the unexposed control worm died during the experiment. Mortality rate between each dose and mortality rate between 24–96 h depending on time was correlated. The mortality rate also varied significantly (p<0.05) with …

Epitopes of Enzymes Involved in Sialylation with Special Reference to Lung Cancer
Abstract: Environmental pollutants, poor air quality, urban growth, deforestation, burning of fuel and indoor air pollution lead to different respiratory diseases including lung cancer with fatal consequences. Almost 2 million people die every year due to harmful effects of indoor air pollutants. Especially an enormous number of children are being affected. Environment pollution is not only reported to affect the lungs but also damage the stem cells and their niche thus …

Brine Shrimp Cytotoxicity was not Warrant for Teratogenicity: Comparative Analysis of Seaweed Methanolic Extracts Collected from Tamil Nadu Coastal Region on Brine Shrimp and Zebra Fish Embryos
Abstract: Brine shrimps have been served as valuable toxicological model systems. Besides, they are being used as preliminary models to identify the effective bioactive drug candidates against different diseases including cancer in recent decades. In the present study, we comparatively analyzed twenty-eight seaweed methanolic extracts for their cytotoxicity and teratogenicity using brine shrimp nauplii and zebra fish embryos (ZFEs). All of the seaweed extracts killed brine shrimps, but, only, Ulva lactuca …

Molecular Diversity of Lampito mauritii and Perionyx excavatus Across North Eastern Ghats of Odisha Using RAPD Markers
Abstract: RAPD-PCR technique using 15 RAPD random primers was used to analyze genetic variation of Lampito mauritti and Perionyx excavatus adult worms collected from the agroclimatic zone of North Eastern Ghats of Odisha which includes four different districts. Studies on molecular characterization of L. mauritti and P. excavatus from different geographical locations indicated variation in the molecular profiling. Analysis of genetic diversity was performed using DNA marker systems with RAPD to …

Removal of Lead from Polluted Water Using Ricinus communis Powder as Bioadsorbent
Abstract: This research paper presents the performance of Ricinus communis as a bio-adsorbent for the removal of lead from water. Among various pollutants, lead is the major pollutant in water. Conventionally, removal of lead is carried out with chemical treatments. In the present research work, aim is to remove lead by using naturally available ecofriendly, economical, nontoxic bio-adsorbent. After literature review, we have selected Ricinus communis for the removal of lead. …

Behavioural Assessment of Muscle Development by Downregulating Different Types of Integrins in Drosophila melanogaster
Abstract: Muscles play a major role in movement and diverse activities required for survival of an organism. In Drosophila, larval crawling and peristalsis are such kinds of rhythmic movements and are driven by muscle contractions. Larval crawling involves random walk on the solid surface whereas peristalsis involves one full body wall muscle contraction from anterior to posterior or in reverse direction in fluid. Accuracy in the development of muscles is an …

Epidemiological Studies: Relation Between Water Hardness and Health (Special Reference to Cardiovascular Diseases)
Abstract: Numerous epidemiologists have conducted many studies to study the relation between the water hardness content and cardiovascular diseases. The amount of hard water a population can intake and the effect of the same on the mortality was studied. Community studies revealed the increase and decrease in the mortality of the population when they are subjected to hard water. The inverse (beneficial) effect of hard water was also studied during the …

Fungal Biosorption: An Innovative Treatment Method for the Removal of Textile Dyes
Abstract: Basic fuchsin is a potential toxic, irritant and carcinogenic dye. Conventional dye effluent treatment strategies can cause extreme ecological problems. Therefore, the present study was focused on the sorption of Basic fuchsin dye by dead Aspergillus niger biomass at different pH (pH 6.0, pH 6.5, pH 7.0 and pH 7.5) from aqueous dye solution. Maximum dye removal was observed at pH 7.0 (80.42%). The equilibrium data were analyzed by employing …
