Production of Ethanol from Rice Straw using Xylose Fermenting Yeast Isolates
Abstract: With increasing energy demand world-over, there is a need to develop cost effective technologies for the production of bio fuels using renewable sources such as lignocellulosic biomass. However, ethanol productivity is still low and the process is not economically viable. The major limiting factors include the complex and highly crystalline structure of lignocellulosics, low loading rate during saccharification and low amount of hexose and pentose sugars generated during saccharification. Distiller’s …

Reduction of Heavy Metal by Biosorption
Abstract: Microorganisms can be used for treatment of metal and metalloid containing water streams in way to sequester the targeted species. The pollutants of concern include lead, chromium, mercury, uranium, selenium, zinc, arsenic, cadmium, gold, silver, copper and nickel. These toxic materials may be derived from mining operations, refining ores, sludge disposal, the processing of radioactive materials, metal plating, or the manufacture of electrical equipment, paints, alloys, batteries, pesticides or preservatives. …

Semi-quantitative Event Specific Detection of Bt Maize (Event MON 810) using Real-Time PCR with SYBR Green Ι Chemistry
Abstract: The objective is this work is to do semi-quantitative analysis for Bt maize (event MON 810) using conventional Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Real Time PCR (SYBR green chemistry) from the fresh maize samples chosen arbitrarily from various locations. The protocol for extraction of good quality genomic Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was standardized without the use of Liquid nitrogen. The DNA used for further studies were obtained by using standardized protocol. …

Effect of Genotype and Growth Regulators for the Callus Initiation and Regeneration of Mustard (Brassica napus)
Abstract: The present study is conducted to develop an efficient protocol for shoot and plant regeneration using four cultivars grown under the agricultural conditions of Bangladesh. Seed explants from four varieties were cultured in vitro and callus formation and swelling as well as the mode of shoot and root regeneration was evaluated. A highly positive response to in vitro culture, i.e., callus formation or swelling, was observed in all the varieties …
