Abstract

In this study, the safety analysis of a three- span reinforced concrete beam supporting a classroom block is carried out considering the failure of the beam in bending, shear and deflection in accordance with the provision of BS8110 (1987). The failure functions were developed based on bending, shear and deflection were solved to obtain the design points using a Matlab code. A sensitivity analysis was conducted on the design parameters to demonstrate their respective significance concerning beam safety. The findings revealed that as the load ratio and beam span increased, the safety indices exhibited a consistent decrease, affecting bending, shear, and deflection parameters accordingly. For a beam span beyond 4.5 m and a load ratio of 1.0 the safety of the beam is not guaranteed due to negative value of the safety index
