Abstract

In case if a region consists of several watersheds, criterial based selection of watershed for prioritisation and conservation studies could be performed by considering various geoecological factors such as elevation gradients, geology (age), drainage parameters, mean annual temperature and mean annual rainfall of the watersheds. A study was performed in this background in Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh, India. This region comprises of 10 watersheds and among these, watershed 1B1B7 (i.e., Baner River watershed) was found suitable for prioritisations. The identified watershed was observed as geoecologically unstable requiring suitable conservation measures and thus proved the accuracy of the criterial based selection methodologies as suggested in this paper.
