Abstract

Hybrid transparent electrodes that combine silver nanowire (AgNW) networks with conductive PEDOT:PSS overcoats are promising replacements for indium tin oxide in flexible solar cells, but their design requires balancing sheet resistance (Rs) against transmittance (T). Physics-based percolation simulations capture this trade-off but are too slow for large design searches. We present a neural-network surrogate trained on 3,000 Latin-hypercube designs from a Monte Carlo resistor-network simulator in which the polymer acts both as a parallel conductor and as a junction-bridging medium. On unseen data the network predicted log10Rs with R2 = 0.992 (median error 4.5%) and T with R2 = 0.920, and ran 4×102 to 6×104 times faster than the simulator. In repeated cross-validation it matched XGBoost and LightGBM but was less accurate than support-vector and Gaussian-process regression, so the contribution lies in the workflow rather than in the learner. Coupled with a genetic algorithm, the surrogate produced a 100-design Pareto front; re-simulation of six designs gave Rs errors of 0.6–14% and a best figure of merit of 0.034 Ω−1 (T = 81.2%, Rs = 3.7 Ω/sq), about 10% above the best of the 3,000 sampled designs. This advantage persisted (9–18%) when each uncalibrated simulator parameter was perturbed. Nanowire density, diameter and length dominated Rs, whereas polymer thickness and nanowire density dominated T; the polymer lowered Rs by 9–22% at a junction resistance of 50 Ω but by 36–57% at 1000 Ω. Published experimental electrodes lie above the predicted front, which should therefore be read as an optimistic bound. All results are simulation-based and await experimental calibration.
