Abstract

Purpose: The research describes estimation of various Mechanical properties like compression, tensile, shear and impact strength of Kevlar/Basalt (KB) Intrawoven 1×1 composite laminates, each comprising 1%, 3% and 5% of Al2O3 (Aluminium oxide) nanoparticles. Design/methodology/approach: These are woven with the help of manual handloom weaving machine, compression moulding technique was adopted for the fabrication of hybrid composite laminates. Attempts have been made to analyse the mechanical properties of Kevlar/Basalt intrawoven composite using various mechanical tests to determine the strength of each specimens. The specimens are cut out from the composite plate according to the ASTM standards required to carry out the following testscompression, tensile, interlaminar shear stress and Izod impact test. The testing was carried out by loading the specimens in the universal testing machine (UTM). For compression test, the specimen was held in the fixture and the force is applied until the breaking point of the specimen. In tensile test, the specimen has been placed in the fixture and put through a controlled tension until failure was achieved. For interlaminar shear stress test, a constant load was applied parallel to its surface. In Izod impact test, a pendulum like pivoting arm is raised to a specific height and then released. Findings: Results of mechanical properties are taken and tabulated. Estimating the mechanical property test thereby ensures the greater mechanical properties on 3% 1×1 intrawoven Kevlar/Basalt laminates. Originality/value: On comparing the specimens used for the mechanical property test the one that contains 3% of Al2O3 nanoparticles performed satisfied also it has greater mechanical strength compared to that of containing 1% and 5% Al2O3 nanoparticles.
