Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar because thepancreas does not produce enough insulin or cells do not respond to insulin. The high blood sugarproduces classical symptoms of polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is non-insulin dependent in which there is an absolute insulin deficiency due to destruction of islets cell in thepancreas. Type 2 diabetes mellitus makes up about 90% of the cases of diabetes with the other 10%primarily due to diabetes mellitus type 1. The research study's aim was to evaluate the effectiveness ofBuerger Allen exercise in improving circulation among diabetes mellitus patients. The researchapproach adopted in the study was quantitative research approach with pre-experimental pre-test andpost-test design. The study was conducted in selected Hospital of GGS Medical College, Faridkot,Punjab by using ABI and checklist scale. The samples were selected by non-probability purposivesampling techniques. 60 samples were selected for study. Study instrument used in research consists oftwo sections, that is, demographic profile, checklist and ABI assessment tool to assess the effectivenessof the Buerger Allen exercise. Researcher applied paired t test for comparison of pre and post-testassessment. The pre-test analysis of ABI shows that out of 60 patients of DM, 45(75%) had mildsymptoms of PVD, and 15(25%) had moderate symptoms. After Buerger Allen exercise, post-test ABIscale shows that 22(36.6%) had normal, 35(58.3%) had mild and 3(5%) had moderate symptoms ofPVD. This shows that exercises were effective. The pre-test checklist for clinical feature of mean scorewas 7.4 with SD 4.90 and post-test checklist score was 5.8 with SD 3.17. The calculated t value of 7.18was higher than tabulated value (2.00) which is highly significant. There is significant differencebetween pre-test and post-test scores of checklist due to intervention of Buerger Allen exercise. Thestudy found that Buerger Allen exercise was effective in improving peripheral circulation amongdiabetes mellitus patients.
