Abstract

Many studies made reports on the soft soil improvement by the application of stone columns.Ordinary stone columns are installed by vibro-replacement method in the field to be get compacted. The material requirement will be based on diameter of column and encasement around the column can be provided to get more loading ability. In this study, the modification of stone column by changing its structure from solid stone column to hollow stone column can be described and reported. A computational study is carried out to get a new design approach. Annular stone columns are ring like hollow columns, that are applied in the soft and stiff clay stratified soils. The modified stone column will have less material requirement, due to hollow structure. The annular stone column is provided geo-grid encasement around inner and outer dia of the column. The analysis was performedby numerical models by using PLAXIS 3D geotechnical software. The two stratified soil system was varied its top soil thickness (soft clay overlying stiff clay) vice versa to know the column Load carrying capacity. The parameters of encasement stiffness (J) (300, 1000, 3000, 6000 and 10000kN/m) and annular column diameter (D) (0.6, 0.8, 1 m) variations are performed to execute the parametric study. The variation of parameters and thicknesses of top layer in stratified soils with changing behavior of annular stone column is examined through models results plotted in graphs andcompared. For the analysis in the software soil model was considered as the Mohr-coulomb failurecriterion in drained and un-drained conditions.
