Abstract

In this article, a novel lower edge defected multi-band patch with modified ground structure (or Defected Ground Structure-DGS) with enhanced bandwidth has been presented. The bandwidth can be enhanced by defecting the partial ground and by arc truncation of lower edges of the patch. The antenna was converted into multi-band by defecting the lower corners. The antenna is resonating at multiple bands i.e. 3.7 GHz, 7.87 (~7.9) GHz, 12.19 (~12.2) GHz and 16.99 (~17) GHz. It is working in the range of 3.05 (~3.1) to greater than 18 GHz which includes ultra wideband (3.1–10.6 GHz), C-Band, X-Band and Ku-Band (4–8, 8–12 and 12–18 GHz). The patch was designed on the top of FR-4 and is excited by a 50 Ohm microstrip line. A partial defected ground structure was printed in the back of the substrate. The proposed structure was devised and simulated by Microwave Studio Computer Simulation Technology (MS CST). By observing the S11 (Return Loss <-10 dB), Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR <2), antenna patterns (Omni-directional), gain, and bandwidth, the performance of the antenna can be estimated. The proposed antenna is suitable for WiMAX (Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access), UWB and satellite communication applications.
