Abstract

In this research, the effectiveness of a packed bed reactor employing a nanorod ceria catalyst for the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide (CO2) is assessed. In order to combat the growing CO2 levels, this study converted the greenhouse gas into dimethyl carbonate, a feedstock for green chemicals. In order to estimate the fractional conversion of methanol and DMC yield under different operating parameters, including reactor height, pressure, temperature, CO2 to methanol feed ratio, total catalyst active sites, and catalyst effectiveness factor, this research built a comprehensive mathematical model. Using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical method—which was included in the computational software tool offered by MathWorks—the performance equations were solved. The outcome indicated a maximum DMC output and methanol conversion of 74% and 93.18%, respectively.
