Abstract

Faridabad district is characterized by a distinct geogenic setting. The given climatic condition in the district has reduced availability of freshwater in the region. The alluvial sediments of the Quaternary age forms the principal aquifer system, besides hardrock aquifer system consists of weathered quartzites of Precambrian age (belonging to the Delhi Super Group). The coupled effect of geogenic setting and anthropogenic influences has led to deterioration of the groundwater quality in the district and other hydrogeological problems. It has been found that the groundwater of the district is brackish in nature due to exploitation of freshwater resulting in up coning of underlying saline water. As a result it has led to addition of various chemical constituents in the groundwater particularly, sodium, chloride, fluoride, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate. Therefore, the article evaluates brackish nature of groundwater of the district through qualitative analysis. It also discusses about the geological impact on the groundwater chemistry of the district through the years 2008, 2009 and 2010. The article also summarizes the possible health issues from the poor quality of groundwater of the region.
