Abstract

Reinforced concrete (RC) is most widely used material in the construction industry. Normally natural sand is used as fine aggregate in the production of conventional concrete. Natural sand is obtained from the river bed through mining operation. To fulfill the requirement of construction industry excessive mining of sand from river bed has been carried out. It is causing threat to the natural environment. Hence, Indian government has led down restrictions on sand mining from river bed which resulted in the scarcity of natural sand. Now construction industry is looking forward for artificial sand as fine aggregate. Artificial sand is obtained by mechanically crushing the natural rocks. It is observed that in the construction industry normally artificial sand is used with quarry dust in the production of concrete. Bond plays major role in the behavior of RC element. In this research work an attempt is made to investigate the bond behavior of reinforced concrete when artificial sand with quarry dust is used as fine aggregate. The investigation was carried out for varying fine aggregates, concrete grades and diameters of deformed steel reinforcing bar. The experimental results showed that bond strength of reinforced concrete is reduced when artificial sand with quarry dust used as fine aggregate.
