Abstract

Mixture of aggregates and asphalt is prepared at Asphalt Mixing Plant (AMP). For a uniform output from plant, feeding the exact amounts of aggregate from feeder unit is very important. So, aggregate feed is one of the critical control point. Problem discussed here is about the lateral deflection of column of supporting frame structure of feeder unit. This research work deals with the evaluation and modification of supporting frame structure of cold aggregate feeder unit to reduce deflection. The deflection of column of existing supporting frame structure is determined analytically and the theoretical results are compared with results obtained from static structural analysis for validation. Stiffness was optimized using intermediate inclined stiffeners and bracing of frame. Effects of various inclination angles of intermediate stiffeners and brace members on the column deflection are main focused area of the study. Six different inclination angles of stiffeners 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90° from the edges of column, and five different inclination angles 600-630, 650-680, 700-730, 750-780, 800-830 of brace element are considered for study. Significant reduction in deflection, equivalent (Von-Mises) stress and improvement in ultimate strength of column are observed and discussed. Key words: Cold aggregate feeder unit, supporting frame structure, column, stiffeners, bracing.
