Abstract

Overview on the investigation and comparison of different action of catalyst and process conditions reveals that the productions of chlorobenzenedoesnot occur naturally, Chlorobenzene is an aromatic compound with chemical formula C6H5Cl. This colorless, volatile, water-insoluble, flammable liquid with a penetrating smell of almonds is a common solvent which is gotten mostly from the chlorination of benzene and widely used intermediate in the manufacture of other chemicals. Production of chlorobenzene is done by feeding gaseous chlorine into liquid benzene in the presence of catalyst chosen from metallic chlorides and iodine. According to another process a gaseous flow containing benzene, hydrogen chloride and oxygen is fed over a catalyst containing copper. In the liquid phase process chlorine is required as the halogenating agent and moreover this process presents disadvantages due to the production of hydrogen chloride as a by-product.In the gaseous phase process a non-negligible amount of benzene is transformed into total oxidation products and the reasons for the low selectivity are mainly sought in the difficulty of controlling the temperature. These drawbacks are overcome by the process of the invention, in which a catalyst of improved activity and mechanical properties is used. Investigation and comparison of different action of catalyst and process conditions in the production of chlorobenzene is going to be carried out in the course of this work.
