Abstract

Gear hobbing is important machining process. The process parameters are expected to influencesurface finish in gear hobbing. Depending upon service requirements, the materials of the gear maybe of different types. A desired level of surface finish and accuracy of gear tooth is neededirrespective of the material of the gear, depending upon type of applications of the gear. The changein process parameters may influence both the vibration and surface finish in hobbing and the extent ofthis influence may be different depending upon the type of gear material. Keeping these aspects underconsideration, the present work has been planned to investigate vibration and surface finish in gearhobbing of cast iron. The process parameter varied in the present work is mainly, axial feed. However, during the study of idle-run vibration hob speed has been varied. Four levels of feed havebeen used in the study and effect of this variation on dynamic performance of the gear hobbingmachine has been investigated. Vibration signals have been recorded in three different directions, atthe bearing housings of the hob arbor. The objective of the present work is therefore, to analyze theeffect of axial feed on dynamic characteristics of the gear hobbing machine while cutting gear toothof cast iron. The scope in the present work has been extended to study the effect of axial feed onsurface finish of the gear tooth of cast iron materials. The experimental data have been interpretedthrough graphical plots and discussions in the three different directions and axial feed.
