Abstract

The design of a cyclone separator with its system components to achieve efficient collection of bacilli for efficient filtration of milled sugar(sucrose) is reported in this paper. Different concepts for the design of the cyclone separator were considered and subjected to performance evaluation. The design models identified for the cyclone separator were the Stairmand, Swift and ShepherdLapple models. The cyclone separator was sized based on the Shepherd Lapple design approach. The performance of the cyclone ensured the supply of high-quality bacilli (fine) in sufficient quantities. The improvements achieved resulted in a direct reduction in loss of sucrose in filter cake (as % sucrose in cane) from a previous five-year average of 0,52% to a level of 0,31% and this translated into a saving of US$450 000 in loss of sugar during the crushing season.
