Automobile braking system is one of the most important mechanical devices. The disc brake system is a device for slowing or stopping the rotation of a wheel. To stop the vehicle, friction material in the form of brake pads is forced mechanically, hydraulically, pneumatically or electromagnetically against both sides of the disc. Friction causes the disc brake and attached wheel to slow or stop. Generally, the cost of disc rotor of motor cycle is around 800 to 900 Rs and that of friction pad is around 150 Rs. Here we are taking the data of pulsar 150 and considering that all the retardation is carried out by the front disc brake only. So by keeping the braking torque constant if we reduce the diameter of disc rotor and increase the value of fluid pressure then we can reduce the cost up to 30% and weight of disc assembly up to 44%. Here, we are increasing the pad area, so more heat will absorb and dissipate into the atmosphere. Here, radius of disc is decreased; so for keeping the breaking torque constant we need more brake fluid pressure. According to design data, models of both the disc brakes are created using Pro-e software. And analysis is done in ANSYS 14.5 to compare the results of both the disc brakes. From the analysis we come to know that with new proposed design we can reduce the cost and weight of disc brake without significant amount of temperature rise. Keywords: Automobile braking system, disc brake, friction padCite this ArticleJadav Chetan T, Rola Lina M.
