Scope

A very special category of polymers is elastomers, making them a necessary topic in the special issue series of the Journal of Polymer & Composites. These are polymers with viscosity and elasticity, also known as viscoelastic. They have a glass transition temperature that is far below ambient temperature, are amorphous, and are only weakly cross-linked. They can be thought of as a single, enormous molecule that is macroscopic in size. The polymer chains' intermolecular forces are not very strong. At temperatures above the glass transition, the chains are highly flexible and a small force results in considerable deformation, yet the crosslinks fully block irreversible flow. Due to their elasticity, flexibility, insoluble nature, and numerous other distinctive characteristics, they play a crucial and pervasive role in daily life. Cis-polyisoprene (natural rubber, NR), cis-polybutadiene (butadiene rubber, BR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and ethylene-propylene monomer are the four most popular elastomers (EPM).
