Screening Sweetpotato Breeding Clones [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] as a Suitable Potential Source of Feedstock for Bioethanol Production
Abstract: Experiments were conducted to evaluate white and orange fleshed sweetpotatoes as a feedstock for bioethanol production, based on dry matter (DM), extractable starch, amylose-amylopectin ratio, fermentation times and ethanol yields. Ten sweetpotato cultivars viz., W308, TU0002, WS149 05, BM8342119 TU090W009, DMOI158096, DMOI158204, TIB4008, TIB4085 and, Beauregard, were planted in replicated field variety trials. Plants were established from 30 cm long vine cuttings and N was applied (P and K were …

Endogenous and Exogenous Enzyme Effects on Different Breeding Clones of Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.) Roots Starch in Ethanol Production
Abstract: The research described herein compares ethanol yield from the conversion of starch in sweetpotato storage roots via endogenous enzyme hydrolysis to that of exogenous enzyme hydrolysis (diastatic barley malt). White-fleshed roots of sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas Lam) breeding clones; TU090R0005, TIB4004, TU090020, TU090013, BM8342197-05, BM854219905 and TIB4085 were processed for distillation to determine ethanol concentration. HPLC analysis was used to determine ethanol and residual sugar concentrations and 1H NMR analysis was …

Participatory Evaluation and Demonstration of Selected Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) Varieties in the West Omo Zone, Southwest Ethiopia
Abstract: In Ethiopia, sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is the second most important root crop after enset, and it is a good source of potassium, vitamins, carbohydrates, dietary fibers, and other essential nutrients. To meet the increasing demand for sweet potatoes, different white and orange-flesh sweet potato varieties have been introduced and evaluated in the southwest region of the country by crop researchersat the Bonga Agricultural Research Center. Accordingly, based on …
