Antibacterial Nanocoatings for Orthodontic Braces and Clear Aligners: Synthesis, Mechanisms, and Translational Potential
Abstract: Orthodontic brackets, archwires and clear aligners create retentive sites that favor biofilm accumulation, leading to white-spot lesions, enamel demineralization and gingival inflammation during treatment. Conventional chemomechanical plaque control has limited effectiveness in this high-risk environment, especially in adolescents with poor compliance. Antibacterial nanocoatings on metallic and polymeric orthodontic components have emerged as a promising strategy to locally suppress cariogenic and periodontopathogenic biofilms while preserving mechanical performance and esthetics. Novel Modified Chitosan/Clay Nanocomposites with Antimicrobial Activity
Abstract: Unmodified sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) and montmorillonite modified by poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) were used to intercalate chitosan (CS) and chitosan blended with polytertahydrofuran (CS-PTHF750). Their structures were characterized by XRD, TEM and IR techniques. The results showed that CS and CS-PTHF750 chains were inserted into silicate layers. The interlayer distance of the layered silicates in the nanocomposites enlarged as the amount of polymer increased. The thermal stability of the nanocomposites is characterized …
