Agricultural Waste-Derived Nanocellulose Composites in Pharmaceutical Packaging: Barrier Performance, Regulatory Considerations and Translational Gaps
Abstract: Pharmaceutical primary packaging is dominated by poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC), poly (vinylidene chloride) laminates and cold-form aluminium, chosen for barrier performance rather than end-of-life behaviour. Nanocellulose from agricultural residues is widely proposed as a renewable alternative, but almost the entire evidence base has been generated against food-packaging requirements. This review re-examines that literature through a pharmaceutical lens. A search of three bibliographic databases covering 2010–2026, supplemented by Google Scholar and …

Harnessing Marine and Agro-Waste Resources: Bioengineered Seaweed Polysaccharide–Coconut Films for Next-Generation Sustainable Packaging
Abstract: The increasing demand for biodegradable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics has led to significant interest in marine biopolymer-based packaging materials. This study focuses on the development of eco-friendly biocomposite films by reinforcing carrageenan, extracted from Kappaphycus alvarezii, with alkali-treated coconut at varying loadings (5%, 10%, and 15% w/w). The films were fabricated via solvent casting and subjected to comprehensive characterization. Mechanical analysis revealed substantial enhancement in tensile strength from 21.3 MPa …

Structure-Property Modeling and Engineering Optimization of Biodegradable Starch-Cellulose Biofoams for Sustainable Packaging
Abstract: Since the packaging industry is an engineered product with complex composites that involve a close relationship between composition, processing, and performance, optimization of formulation, cellular morphology, and engineering performance of biodegradable starch-based biofoams presents a considerable challenge. This study proposes a machine-learning-aided structure–property modeling framework to design and optimize starch-based biodegradable biofoams for sustainable packaging applications. A physics-informed synthetic dataset consisting of 10,000 formulations was created based on engineering relationships …
