First Insights into Whole Genome Sequencing of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex: Molecular Diversity and Drug Susceptibility Patterns in Senegal
Abstract: Background: We conducted a bibliographic analysis of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in sub-Saharan Africa, which included the analysis of 8,139 genomic sequences from 34 of the 49 sub-Saharan African countries. Notably, only one complete sequence from Senegal was identified, which had been generated in the United States. Our primary objective was to utilize whole genome sequencing (WGS) to detect resistance in anti-tuberculous strains of the MTBC in Senegal. This …

Genetic Authentication of Acacia Senegal (L.) Wild
Abstract: A study was carried out to ascertain the taxonomic identity and phylogenetic lineage of three presumed Acacia senegalensis using molecular markers. Three (3) varieties of seeds presumed to belong to Acacia spp. were collected from the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN) Benin City and three BP haplotypes (A, B, and C) was used as control for the analysis. These seeds were processed at the Applied Biotech International Laboratory Nigeria …

Live Epidemiological Tracking of COVID-19 in Senegalese Participants of the Hajj
Abstract: Background: Since the COVID-19 outbreak, global efforts have focused on controlling the disease. However, intense cross border movements pose a risk for the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 strains. A recent example is the detection of cases among the 2024 Senegalese pilgrims returning from Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Investigations of these cases have revealed genomic evolution of the virus. The lack of surveillance may lead to the emergence of high-threat strains. This …

Lower Genital Tract Infections in Pregnant Women: Epidemiology and Risk Factors Associated in Dakar, Senegal
Abstract: Vaginal infections are responsible for many problems in women of childbearing age and significantly influence pregnancy outcomes. This study sought to ascertain the prevalence of lower genital tract infections and the risk factors associated with them in pregnant women under observation at the Nabil Choucair Health Centre in Dakar, Senegal. This nine-month cross-sectional study, which involved women between 34 and 38 weeks gestation (WG), was carried out from July 2020 …

Real Time Characterization of BA.2.86 and Its Variant (JN.1) in Senegal Using Midnight Protocol
Abstract: During the week ending August 13th, 2023, the most prevalent variant of interest (VOI), uploaded to GISAID, was the BA.2.86 variant. This SARS-CoV-2 Omicron lineage was described as the first phylogenetically distinct from the currently circulating SARS-CoV-2 Omicron XBB lineages, including EG.5.1 and HK.3. Compared to the XBB and BA.2 lineages, the BA.2.86 possesses more than 30 mutations in the Spike (S) protein, suggesting a significant potential for immune evasion. …

Conservation of Agricultural Products in Sub-Saharan Zone by Ecological Off-grid Cold Room, Case of Senegal
Abstract: In this article, we have studied and dimensioned a solar cold room for the preservation of potatoes in sub-Saharan areas. The conservation of post-harvest agricultural products is a major issue in this part of Africa, hence the need to focus our research on off-grid refrigeration installations. In this work, we focused on the use of local materials such as agricultural residues and terracotta for the construction of solar cold rooms. …
