Abstract: The effects of pollution on water have been reviewed. This study is aimed at determining the level of pollution of the River Benue, with the view of assessing its use as potable water. Different analytical techniques including titrimetry, gravimetry, potentiometry, and spectrophotometry were used for the study. The total hardness gave (22.28 mg/L and 41.87 mg/L) for dry and rainy season respectively. Electrical conductivity gave (91.35 mg/L and 54.10 mg/L) …

Abstract: This study evaluated the diversity and abundance of fish species in Lower River Benue, Makurdi, Nigeria, for a duration of 3 months. Fish samples were collected from fishermen at immediately after landing using assorted fish gears. A total of 1, 106 fish specimens, representing 16 families and 35 species, were identified and examined. The dominant families from the sample were Cichlidae (24%) and Schilbeidae (20%) while the families Distochontidae, Latidae, …

Investigating the Dietary Flexibility and Feeding Behavior of Clarias anguillaris and Auchenoglanis biscutatus in a Tropical River Ecosystem

By Tivfa Samuel Gbaior, Joel Inya Odo, Charles Ifeanyi Odoh, Edward Terhemen Akange, Ayush Madan

Abstract: Studies on food and feeding habits of fishes are required to guide the selection of fish species for culture. The current study determined the food and feeding habits of Clarias anguillaris and Auchenoglanis biscutatus in the Lower River Benue at Makurdi, Nigeria. Fish samples were collected biweekly from local fishermen at the Wadata landing site who fished with different gears like gillnets, cast nets, hook and line, traps and lift …
