Growth Performance and Weight Estimation of Large White Piglets Weaned at Different Ages
Abstract: The study was carried out on 24 neonatal large white piglets at the National Livestock Breeding Station, Pong-Tamale to assess their performance when weaned at different ages and to determine the relationship between linear body measurements and the body weight of piglets in weight prediction. The piglets were randomly weaned at three selected weaning ages (4, 6 and 8 weeks) but reared under uniform conditions. Initial body weight (BW), initial …

Haemato-Biochemical Changes in Staphylococcal Species Induced Mastitis in Mouse Model
Abstract: In this study, haemato-biochemical changes in mouse mastitis by inoculating Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. chromogenes, S. haemolyticus and S. Aureus isolated from bovine milk was studied. Blood was collected by intracardiac route at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. Haematological changes noticed were: white blood cells (WBC) decreased in S. haemolyticus and S. chromogenes at 48 h; S. haemolyticus and S. aureus at 96 h. S. haemolyticus showed increased …

Development of A Rapid Microtiterplate Based Colorimetric Method for Estimation of Non-esterified Fatty Acids in Bovine Plasma
Abstract: Non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) is one of the most important blood metabolites contributing significantly during body growth, cyclicity, pregnancy and lactation, and it plays more vital role particularly during transition phase of the biological processes like pregnancy to lactation transition period. Determination of blood concentrations of NEFA is, therefore, important. The measurement technique or assay for measurement of blood NEFA should be simple, reliable, accurate, rapid and cheap. Here, the …

Development of an Endocrine Profiles Based Mathematical Model for the Estrous Cycle in Indian Crossbred CowsDevelopment of an Endocrine Profiles Based Mathematical Model for the Estrous Cycle in Indian Crossbred Cows
Abstract: Declined fertility of the high-yielding dairy cows reared under intensive condition of management is of great concern not only for India but for the whole world. The bovine estrous cycle, particularly the estrus, is tightly controlled by the complex interplay of various organs and hormones. Mathematical modeling of the bovine estrous cycle could help in understanding the dynamics of this complex biological system. The authors, therefore, developed a mechanistic mathematical …

Diagnosis of Subclinical Mastitis in Cross Bred Cattle
Abstract: Subclinical mastitis was diagnosed in 1599 quarter milk samples from 417 apparently healthy lactating cows in and around Tirupati. Diagnosis of subclinical mastitis was done by California Mastitis Test and Electrical Conductivity Test. The quarter-wise incidence of SCM as detected by CMT and EC was 27.83 and 19.95% respectively whereas the animal-wise incidence was 52.28 and 38.13% for CMT and EC respectively in the present study. Keywords: Cattle, mastitis, CMT, …

Toxoplasmosis—A Zoonotic Threat to Human Beings
Abstract: Toxoplasmosis is a congenital as well as postnatally acquired zoonosis characterized by retinochoroiditis and encephalitis. It causes abortion in pregnant women. Mostly it affects immune compromised individuals particularly very young and very old women. The major sources of human infection are ingestion of raw or lightly cooked meat containing live Toxoplasma gondii tissue cysts and ingestion of raw or lightly cooked vegetables contaminated with oocysts or exposure to oocysts derived …

A Brief Note on Pathology of Uterine Abnormalities in Goats
Abstract: Goat was the earliest ruminant and probably first animal after dog to be domesticated by man. Due to its economic viability, goat is also called the poor man’s cow and it is an essential component among livestock in agriculture-based production system. Around 80% of the global goat population is in the developing countries. India holds second largest population of goats and stands first in goat milk production and is the …

A Comprehensive Overview on Genital Prolapse in Domestic Animals
Abstract: The common prepartum and postpartum complication encountered in bovine species are vagino-cervical prolapse (VCP) and total uterine prolapse (TUP). In other species incidence of genital prolapse is rarely reported. Still debate for causes of genital prolapse is unpredictable. Reports from researcher revealed most probable cause for genital prolapse is hypocalcaemia associated with hormonal imbalance. Prolapse of the floor, the lateral walls and a portion of the roof of the vagina …

Obstetrical Operation and Epidural Analgesia in Domestic Animals: An Overview
Abstract: Harvesting a live calf depends upon the early intervention when getting call from owners or farm managers. Obstetrics skills are required to manage the dystocia either maternal or fetal form of dystocia. Diagnostic evaluation and treatment depends upon the condition presented to the obstetrician. Most probably obstetrician follows mutation, forced extraction, fetotomy and caesarean section. Most of the cases require mutation operation, the valid mutation operation followed by judicious traction …
