Abstract

A cognitive radio (CR) is an intelligent radio that can be programmed and configured dynamically. Its transceiver is designed to use the best wireless channels in its vicinity. Such a radio automatically detects available channels in wireless spectrum by the process of spectrum sensing, then accordingly changes its transmission or reception parameters to allow more concurrent wireless communications in a given spectrum band at one location. This paper discusses the maximization of spectrum usage efficiency in co-operative spectrum sensing using different newer nature inspired optimization algorithms, particle swarm optimization, hybrid particle swarm optimization-genetic algorithm with OR fusion rule scheme. While using particle swarm optimization, spectrum efficiency can be obtained up to 97.72% of maximum ideal efficiency but in case of hybrid particle swarm optimization-genetic algorithm it will reach up to 98.99% with corresponding decrement of sensing time.
