Wireless sensor network is a group of wireless sensor nodes, each capable of sensing, processing and communicating, however, once deployed in numbers, form a network which cooperatively monitor the state of the physical world. The sensor nodes in the network have small batteries and cannot be replaced once exhausted. Due to this, the operational lifetime of sensor nodes is crucial in a variety of monitoring applications, since the number of active sensors in a wireless sensor network has been proposed as a measure, although limited, which dictates the network lifetime. This led us to find out new horizons for extending the lifetime of sensor nodes for longevity of service (LoS). Herein we propose a constrained strategy to make more number of sensors active in a WSN, which are prone to failure due to energy exhaustion. This strategy is shown to obtain increased lifetime of the nodes in WSN. This benefit is especially relevant in networks where there are fewer chances to replenish sensor nodes over time. The proposed approach attempts to provide an inclusive solution to prolong sensor node life time thereby enhance the time of coverage, time of failure due to running out of battery and also network lifetime, provide timely sensing, message delivery and improve network robustness. Keywords: Wireless sensor network, sensor nodes, operational lifetime, network lifetime, extending lifetime, constrained strategy, longevity of serviceCite this Article: K.
