Magnetic fluids have promising potential for direct energy conversion system. Magnetic fluids are stable suspension of nano-sized ferromagnetic particles in suitable non-magnetic carriers like kerosene, organic liquids, water etc. The typical curie temperature of magnetic particles is controlled by selecting constituents of the ferromagnetic material. There are large numbers of practical applications of magnetic fluids in various fields ranging from engineering to medicine. A thermomagnetic device gives an idea of conversion of energy using only magnetic fluid, heat transfer and a magnetic field. The working principle of this energy conversion system is based on the temperature dependent variation of magnetization of magnetic material. This variation is expressed by its pyromagnetic co-efficient. This property is applied in magneto caloric engine. Higher co-efficient materials will produce higher efficiency of energy conversion. In order to achieve good efficiency we need a fluid, which should have high saturation magnetization and low curie temperature, i.e. a temperature at which system becomes paramagnetic. This fluid can then be used to drive magnetocaloric engine, where heat is directly converted into mechanical work. This paper reviews the performance of different energy conversion system using a magnetic fluid. Keywords: Magnetic fluid, energy conversion system, heat transfer, magnetic fieldCite this ArticleVora SH, Acharya GD, Bhatnagar SP.
