A car is no more a luxurious belonging of a person rather it has become an integral part of a modern family. One always prefers a car for safe transfer to one’s destination at low cost, with comfort and predictable travel outcome. The approach here presents a new car-data collection platform based on existing network infrastructure, internet, to collect driving data of vehicles remotely. Firstly, the vehicle data is monitored and is stored locally. It is then sent to a central server for keeping a record of the past events. Few of the important parameters of the vehicle that are monitored include engine rpm, speed, throttle position, alcohol intoxication and seat-belt status of the driver. If any of these or other OBD (on-board diagnostics) parameters being monitored exceed their set maximum limits then the driver is warned by blinking a warning light while the user/admin person is alerted of the same via SMS. This way the proposed system provides information on driving pattern, driving cycle, fault and reliability. Minicomputer Raspberry Pi is used as in-vehicle device which comes with Python programming language installed by default on it.
