Abstract

Animal welfare is a critical aspect of veterinary practice and research, aiming to ensure the physical and psychological well-being of animals. Technological innovations have played a significant role in advancing animal welfare by providing enhanced monitoring, improved feeding systems, and environmental enrichment devices. This review article examines the contributions of technology, specifically sensor-based monitoring systems, automated feeding systems, and environmental enrichment devices, to enhance animal welfare in veterinary practice and research. Sensor-based monitoring systems enable real-time tracking of an animal's health, activity levels, and environmental conditions. By detecting early signs of health issues and facilitating better management of chronic conditions, these systems promote animal well-being. Automated feeding systems ensure consistent and precise feeding, preventing underfeeding or overfeeding and allowing tailored nutrition to meet specific dietary needs. Environmental enrichment devices, such as puzzle feeders and interactive toys, offer mental stimulation, prevent behavioural issues, and improve the overall quality of life for animals. Through case studies and research findings, this article highlights the positive impact of technology on animal welfare. Scientific evidence supports the effectiveness of sensor-based monitoring systems, automated feeding systems, and environmental enrichment devices in enhancing animal well-being. However, challenges and limitations related to the use of technology in animal welfare must also be acknowledged. The article concludes by discussing future directions and emerging trends in the field, emphasizing the potential for further advancements in technology to continue improving animal welfare. Overall, technological innovations have significantly contributed to enhancing animal welfare in veterinary practice and research, ensuring better health outcomes and improved quality of life for animals
