Abstract

Traditional systems of medicine are practiced across different parts of India. The major traditional system of medicine in India are termed as AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy)—these systems are in use since centuries and are considered as safe without any side effects. Over the counter medications is also common in the name of herbal products. Generally, these herbal drugs are safe, but if not used on proper traditional principles and/or in correct dosage, may implicit major/minor adverse effects. In the present case study, we have discussed a case experiencing visual side effects of a Unani pharmacopeial preparation (Habbe Shifa) used for Nazla Haar. The adverse effects probably arise due to over-dosage and were managed accordingly. The paper concluded that adverse drug reporting should be encouraged in AYUSH system of medicine by their practitioners and patients should avoid over the counter purchase of any medicinal products.
