Evaluation of Mammographic Breast Density in Benign and Malignant Breast Disease Patients
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to compare the breast density in benign breast disease and carcinoma of the breast and to evaluate the association between breast density and the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data Systems (BIRADS) score to investigate the potential of breast density as a prognostic indicator. In this study, histologically proven cases of 30 benign breast disease patients and 30 breast carcinoma patients were included. Breast density was assessed using the American College of Radiologists (ACR) Classification, and BIRADS scores were assigned according to the guidelines established by the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BIRADS). Clinicopathological characteristics were also evaluated. The association between breast density and BIRADS score was analyzed using the chi-square test, and statistical significance was determined at a p-value of less than 0.005. In the study, BIRADS scores of 2 and 3 were observed in twenty-eight (93.3%) patients with benign breast disease, while BIRADS scores of 4 and 5 were noted in twenty-nine (96.7%) patients with breast carcinoma. Dense breasts categorized as ACR-3 and ACR-4 were found in twenty-five (83.3%) benign breast disease patients and twenty-nine (96.7%) breast carcinoma patients. A statistically non-significant association (p = 0.322) between breast density and BIRADS score was observed in carcinoma patients. No statistically significant association was detected between breast density and BIRADS score in carcinoma patients.
