Abstract

The aim of this research was to screen the activity of carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) in laboratory stocks of psychrotrophic fungi (Penicillium canescens BPF4, Truncatella angustata BPF5 and Pseudogymnoascus roseus BPF6). Of the three fungal species, the psychrotrophic fungus T. angustata showed maximum CMCase activity under cold temperatures. The maximum CMCase activity from T. angustata was found at 40°C, a residual activity of 60 % at 4°C, 90% at 10°C, 75% at 20°C and 88% at 50°C was observed. The CMCase activity at 40°C was found to be 279.6 IU/L, while at 4°C, 10°C and 20°C the activity was 222.2 IU/L, 259 IU/L and 212 IU/L respectively. The enzyme showed stability at 4°C and 60°C, to the extent of 100% for 1 h. The enzyme is thus considered to be thermostable one. The CMCase enzyme has extensive range of applications and the potential of T. angustata seems to open new application fields in the areas of industrial processes.   Keywords: Carboxymethyl Cellulose, Truncatella angustata, Cold-active CMCaseCite this ArticleAshiq Magrey, Sanjay Sahay, Ragini Gothalwal.
