Abstract

The most precious and greatest blessing that God has bestowed upon a woman is motherhood. Women go through a lot of physiological and psychological changes during this period. Therefore, a quasi-experimental study to assess the effectiveness of music therapy on pain perception and anxiety level among primigravida mothers in the first stage of labour at the Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital, Vallah, Amritsar was carried out. A quantitative quasi- experimental design was used in the present research study. A total of 60 primigravida mothers were selected through the convenience sampling technique and the selected samples were assigned into two different groups—30 in experimental group and 30 in control group. Numeric Pain Rating Scale and Beck Anxiety Inventory was used as a tool for data collection. The music therapy (Indian classical music that is, raga piloo) was given for 30 min to the experimental group. The data were collected during 8 February 2021 to 13 April 2021 at the S.G.R.D. Hospital, Vallah, Amritsar, India. The mean and standard deviation of pain and anxiety score of mothers was 7.77±1.278 and 26.17±4.332, respectively before giving the intervention and the mean and standard deviation of pain and anxiety score of mothers was 5.80±1.064 and 19.43±3.421, respectively after giving an intervention with a mean difference for pain as 1.97 and for anxiety as 6.74. The effectiveness was statistically tested by using t-test which revealed that for pain t = 10.77 and for anxiety t = 7.584 and the result was found to be significant at p<0.05 level of significance. The study concluded that “music therapy” can reduce the pain perception and anxiety level among primigravida mothers during the first stage of labour.
